MACJC South lead at stake at Hinds

MACJC South lead at stake at Hinds

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast and Hinds enter Thursday night's tussle knowing only one of the teams will finish atop the MACJC South.

The Bulldogs (3-1) and Eagles (3-0) will be trying to get to 3-0 in the division.

"If we can find a way for this football team to go into Hinds and pull this one out, it puts us right where we need to be," Gulf Coast coach Chad Huff said. "Top of the league, 3-0 in the South. It's a big game for both of us, because we're both in the same situation."

The game kicks off at Joe Renfroe Stadium in Raymond at 6:30 p.m. Listen to the MGCCC broadcast at https://livestream.com/accounts/5943231/events/7747773, or watch Hinds' broadcast at http://www.hindsccsports.net/Channel_1.

Hinds has played one fewer game than the rest of the South thanks to Hurricane Harvey. The Eagles' game at Northwest in Week 1 was suspended after three sloppy quarters when there was no score and no power.

They have outscored Southwest and Pearl River 82-30 the last two weeks, taking advantage of seven turnovers.

"They're undefeated. They're a team that's getting better each week," Huff said. "Hinds is scoring a bunch of points and giving up very little. They're a dangerous football team with a dangerous quarterback."

Tylan Morton, a 6-foot-4 freshman from Griffin, Ga., has completed 34 of 64 passes for 515 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions. DeVante Scott is averaging 9.1 yards on 32 rushes with four touchdowns, and Stephen Guidry returns at wide receiver with a pair of touchdowns.

Gulf Coast's Deandre Torrey (Fr,  Gautier/Gautier) ranks second in the MACJC with 122.3 yards per game. He's got five touchdowns and nearly 500 yards in four games. The Bulldogs are outrushing their opponents 271.5 to 129.8 yards per game.

Getting that attack untracked faster will be a key concern in Raymond. The Bulldogs trailed 13-3 at halftime against East Central before exploding for 35 points in the second quarter on the way to a 48-25 win.

"We only had 15 plays in the first half," Huff said. "The second half, we played with a little more intensity and more fire. We were playing hard, but I don't think we were playing to win. We were playing not to lose. I was happy with the guys responded coming out of the locker room."
