D'IBERVILLE — Mississippi Gulf Coast swept its third straight doubleheader Saturday to extend its win streak to seven games.
The Bulldogs (7-1) defeated Dyersburg State 12-10 and needed only five innings to beat Kaskaskia 13-3 at D'Iberville High School. Both are NJCAA Division I schools. Gulf Coast plays in Division II.
"We pitched well in spots and we swung the bats well all day long," Batts said. "Overall, I was pleased with the desire and the effort they played with."
Chase Rhodes (So., St. Stanislaus/Bay St. Louis) had a double and triple among three hits, driving in three runs against Dyersburg (12-2), which had swept Pearl River on Friday. Sam Taylor (So., New Hope/Columbus) had a two-run homer, and Tyler Evans (So., D'Iberville/D'Iberville) two-run triple.
Dylan Menhennett (Fr., Biloxi/Biloxi) also doubled for Gulf Coast to drive in two runs.
Dylan Mills-Derouen (R-So., Biloxi/Biloxi) picked up on the win to improve to 2-1.
In the nightcap, the Bulldogs exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning. Beau Bratton (Fr., St. Patrick/Biloxi) made his first collegiate homer memorable with a grand slam.
Donald Stokes (R-Fr., Ocean Springs/Pascagoula) doubled for Gulf Coast, and Ty Barnes (Fr., Petal/Petal) didn't allow an earned run while giving up just four hits. He's 2-0 on the season.
Kaskaskia falls to 2-6.
The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday when they travel to Thomasville, Ala., to play Alabama Southern. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
"We've just got to keep working," Batts said. "You can't worry about what your record is. You can't worry about how many wins you have in a row. I told them the more we win, the harder we're going to work. That's why we've gotten to where we are."
