No. 10 Mississippi Gulf Coast got behind but carried the fight to No. 4 Holmes on Friday, falling 2-1 in Ridgeland.
The Bulldogs put a lot of pressure on the home team late, but couldn't get the equalizer.
"That was a tough game against a very talented team," Gulf Coast coach Ryan Joiner said. "Our response in the second half after going down 2-0 was excellent."
Gulf Coast is now 6-2 overall after suffering its first loss in the MACCC. Holmes is 9-1, 4-1.
Gulf Coast's two losses this year have been by one goal to top teams in the NJCAA. In addition to Friday's defeat, the Bulldogs lost 1-0 to No. 2 Johnson County.
Holmes scored four minutes before halftime, then doubled its lead in the 62nd minute. Gulf Coast got a goal from Anna Katherine Thriffiley (Fr., Biloxi/St. Patrick).
"AK took a great chance on a set piece to get us back to 2-1," Joiner said. "We had chances to equalize in the last 15, but credit to Holmes for withstanding the pressure. Now, it's on to the next game at home against Jones."
The Bulldogs will be back at Perk on Tuesday when the No. 9 Bobcats visit. Kickoff will be at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are available at http://mgcccbulldogs.com/tickets, and the game will be streamed at https://mgcccbulldogs.com/watch.
