First goal leads to 5-1 road win

When Mississippi Gulf Coast scores first, the Bulldogs are a pretty good team. They did that Friday night in Senatobia and cruised to a 5-1 win over Northwest Mississippi.

"It allows to play a little more free," Gulf Coast coach Chris Handy said. "that's important, but the other side is it makes the other team more desperate. That opens up more space for us. When teams are allowed to be more defensive against us, it makes it more difficult for us."

Gulf Coast improved to 8-5 overall and 4-3 in the MACCC after winning for the third time in the last four games. Northwest is 4-8-2, 1-6.

Tobias Buch (So., Skovlunde, Denmark/Borupgaard Gymnasium) got the important first goal in the 17th minute, with an assist from Alexander Mink (So., Long Beach/Long Beach).

Trey Roche (Fr., Pass Christian/Pass Christian) made it 2-0 in the 28th minute with an assist from Braylon Poindexter (Fr., Madison/St. Joseph), and that was the margin at the break.

Omarion Brown (Fr., Linstead, Jamaica/St. Catherine) picked up a keeper assist in the second half, setting up Hayden Thomas (So., Clinton/Clinton) with a long boot. Ben Myrick (Fr., Hurley/East Central) scored two icing-on-the-cake goals around Northwest's only score.

"We played good in the first half, and everyone got to play," Handy said." We had some really good moments in the first half. We're just trying to get in playoff form as best we can. I thought O played really well in goal. Ben stepping up and scoring two goals in the second half is really impressive. We're continuing to try to sharpen things up for a playoff push."

Gulf Coast will celebrate Sophomore Night on Tuesday when Copiah-Lincoln visits. Ceremonies will take place immediately following the women's game, approximately 6:45 p.m. The men's game follows immediately after.
