No. 3 MGCCC tied for first at Carey Classic
No. 3 Mississippi Gulf Coast is tied for first after the first round of the William Carey Collegiate Classic, played Monday at Canebrake Country Club in Hattiesburg.
The Bulldogs, eight-time defending NJCAA Region 23 champions, are one of just two junior colleges competing in the 12-team field representing 10 schools. Their 2-over 290 tied them with Coastal Georgia and Spring Hill.
Gulf Coast's Grant Motter leads the field after firing a 3-under 69. He's one shot ahead of Coastal Georgia's Seth Sanders.
The Bulldogs' Phillip Hickam shot even-par 72 and is tied for fifth. George Kawell is another shot back, tied for eighth.
Gulf Coast has two alumni playing for William Carey. Bryce Jackson is tied for eighth at 1-over, and Conner Entriken shot 4-over and is tied for 26th.
East Central, the other MACJC team playing in the event, is in eighth, 21-over par.
The second round will be played Tuesday.
