Motter wins medalist as No. 2 MGCCC claims MACJC event

No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast got back in the winning spirit on Sunday, coming back from four shots back after the first round to win MACJC Event No. 6 in Columbus.

The Bulldogs' Grant Motter fired a 4-under 68 at Lion Hills Golf Course to finish at 3-under and win by two shots over Meridian's Lance Strickland and by three over Copiah-Lincoln's Phillip Heine.

"We played well," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "Grant won another medalist trophy and kind of carried the team."

George Kawell also made the All-Tournament Team by finishing fifth at 5-over. Wyatt Adkison finished tied for sixth another shot back, and Phillip Hickam tied for eighth at 7-over.

"Phillip hit the ball OK even when he shot 79 yesterday," Snell said. "He's hitting the ball as well as I've ever seen him hit it. He's just not putting the scores in. Today, he wasn't getting anything out of his round today, but he held it together and fought back to even par."

Jonathon Newman, who was playing as an individual, was also tied for eight. Colin Troxler was 8-over in a tie for 15th.

Gulf Coast has won three MACJC events this season, finishing second in the other two. One event was cancelled.

"It's always nice to win," Snell said. "It gives us a little confidence, but we're not overly confident. We know we can play better. We have to work hard. It just goes to show you, when we play well we can play with anybody."
