No. 1 Bulldogs race to another win

No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast surged past two teams to close the fall golf schedule with another victory, enduring a chilly, windy couple of days at the Jones College Invitational in Laurel.

The Bulldogs' Matthew Bond won medalist by making up his own three-shot deficit.

"It was definitely a story of survival this week with the weather conditions and all that," Gulf Coast coach Brad Thornton said. "I'm very proud of how we responded today and posted what I thought was a really respectable round. We competed our tails off the entire day."

The Bulldogs shot a tournament-low round of 15-over to finish 12 shots ahead of host Jones. Bond, a freshman from Ocean Springs, finished at 10-over to tie with East Central's Harvey Underwood after 36 holes. He made par on the second playoff hole to win.

"I've never been in a playoff before, but I wasn't stressed or anything," Bond said. "No nerves or anything, just kept a level head and accepted that either result would've been good."

Paul Hoefer (Fr., Heidelberg, Germany/Kurpfalzgymnasium Mannheim) shot a tourney-best 2-over in the final round to get into a third-place tie and join Bond on the All-Tournament team.

Craig Bullock (Fr., Ripley /Ripley) and Cal Wier (Fr., Hernando/Lewisburg) carded 77s to finish in the top-20.

The Bulldogs won their second MACCC tournament of the fall and also lost their Charles Cooper Classic in a playoff. They'll return to action in January.
