Chubb will play in finals at nationals
No. 12 Mississippi Gulf Coast's Evan Chubb will play in the No. 4 singles consolation draw finals after winning Thursday at the NJCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship in Plano, Texas.
Chubb (Fr, Biloxi/St. Patrick) defeated South Carolina-Sumter's Nicklaus Neal 4-6, 6-1, 10-8 to advance. It was his second win in a three-set tiebreaker in as many days.
He'll play Abraham Baldwin's Lukas Zavrel at 8 a.m. Friday.
Chubb and No. 3 doubles partner Reid Cudd (So, Wiggins/Stone) lost in the consolation semis to Seminole's Andrew Parker and Aleksandr Pokusaev 6-3, 6-2.
Gulf Coast has 10 points and is tied with Meridian for 18th place in the team standings. A Chubb win tomorrow would make the Bulldogs the highest-finishing MACJC team in the field.
