Gulf Coast edges Delgado
PERKINSTON – Mississippi Gulf Coast battled the rust Thursday night but the Lady Bulldogs managed to defeated Delgado 49-45 at the Weathers/Wentzell Center.
Markeisha Watson and Courtney White led Gulf Coast with 11 points each, helping the squad improve its record to 8-2.
"We hadn't played a game in 33 days," Gulf Coast coach Jason Conner said. "I thought we had some opportunities to stretch it out but foul trouble got us."
Delgado falls to 3-13.
The Lady Bulldogs dug themselves an early 9-3 hole, but went on an 11-3 run to end the first quarter and lead 16-13. They'd extend the lead to as many as 10 in the first half and would never trail again.
But a 38-29 third-quarter lead would be all but erased by a 10-2 run Lady Dolphins to end the stanza.
Tirana Dampeer had a pair of buckets to open the fourth quarter, giving the Lady Bulldogs a cushion they'd need to outlast Delgado.
"We didn't really shoot it that well," Conner said. "I think Delgado is better right now than they were down there."
Gulf Coast returns to action Saturday when LSU-Eunice visits Perkinston. Tipoff is at 4 p.m.
