MGCCC’s Courtney White signs with Point University

PERKINSTON – Mississippi Gulf Coast's Courtney White has signed a women's basketball scholarship to continue her career at Point University.

The 6-foot post player from Harrison Central averaged 8.4 points and 6.1 rebounds as a Lady Bulldogs sophomore. She shot better than 46 percent from the field.

"It's been an excellent experience. I really grew here," White said. "My leadership skills have gotten much better, and I want to thank everybody at Gulf Coast for the opportunities I got while I was here."

White missed the 2014-15 season with a knee injury, but played in 21 games as a freshman the year before. She averaged 3.6 points per game and nearly two rebounds a game.

"I have seen her mature," Gulf Coast coach Jason Conner said. "She's a straight-A student, very goal oriented and driven. That comes from her family. I've seen her mature with her relationships and how she does with others."

Point University, located in West Point, Ga., is a member of NAIA Division II and plays in the National Christian College Athletic Association. The Skyhawks won 23 games last year, with coach Tory Wooley named NCCAA South Region Coach of the Year.

"Point University reminded me a lot of here," White said. "When I walked through the door I was welcomed with open arms. The coach there is amazing."

Conner sees her going to Point University getting better on the court and in the classroom.

"Courtney is a thinking basketball player," he said. "It's going to be a good fit, and she has the potential to get numbers. She's going to have a successful career there and get a four-year degree, and I wouldn't put it past her to get her master's and go on to get her doctorate."
