15 Bulldogs named All-MACCC South

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast was one of three football teams with 15 All-MACCC South selections, as determined by the coaches' votes.

Offensive linemen Omarion Bender and Demorrsion Brown; defensive backs Willie Breland and Shadrick Toodle; and wide receiver Tyler Henderson led the way as First-Team selections. Linebacker Taurean Davis, kicker Aiden Guinn, offensive lineman Jeremiah Keyhea, punter Joshua Selmes, quarterback Landon Varnes and running back Alan Woods were named to the Second Team, with Honorable Mention awards going to linebacker Kaleb Arterberry, wide receiver Mason Beverly, defensive lineman Tyler Bailey and offensive lineman Lane Hewett.

Gulf Coast tied with Jones and Copiah-Lincoln for the most All-MACCC South selections. The Bulldogs claimed a share of the MACCC South championship, the seventh straight year they've either won it outright or earned a share.

The First Team honorees are eligible for selection to the All-Region 23 Team, and those players will be nominated for NJCAA All-American.

Omarion Bender, First Team

Bender, a sophomore offensive tackle from Soso, helped pave the way for the top offense in the nation. The Bulldogs racked up a national-best 466.1 yards per game, and they piled up 37.0 points per game, fourth-most.

Willie Breland, First Team

Breland, a sophomore defensive back from Wiggins, had 35 tackles, including two for loss and a sack. He also had one interception, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble.

Demorrsion Brown, First Team

Brown, a sophomore offensive tackle from Canton, helped Gulf Coast be the top passing team in the country. The Bulldogs led the NJCAA with 313.8 passing yards per game.

Tyler Henderson, First Team

Henderson, a sophomore wide receiver from Vicksburg, led the NJCAA in receptions (67), yards per game (109.3) and touchdowns (12).

Shadrick Toodle, First Team

Toodle, a sophomore defensive back from Mobile, Ala., had 20 tackles with one interception. He also broke up two passes and returned a blocked field goal in the conference semifinals to the 1-yard line.

Taurean Davis, Second Team

Davis, a sophomore defensive back from Quitman County, is third in the country with 89 tackles. He had four tackles for loss, including a sack, and snagged an interception.

Aiden Guinn, Second Team

Guinn, a freshman kicker from Wiggins, made 8-of-9 field goals and 49-of-52 point-afters. He's third in the country among kickers with 73 points.

Jeremiah Keyhea, Second Team

Keyhea, a sophomore offensive guard from Laurel, helped pave the way for the top offense in the nation. The Bulldogs racked up a national-best 466.1 yards per game, and they piled up 37.0 points per game, fourth-most. 

Joshua Selmes, Second Team

Selmes, a freshman punter from Central Coast, Australia, averaged 38.1 yards per punt. He had a long of 65 yards with 11 downed inside the 20-yard line, and opponents returned only two punts for 3 yards.

Landon Varnes, Second Team

Varnes, a sophomore quarterback from Brandon, rewrote the Gulf Coast record book and leads the NJCAA in completions (210), attempts (316), yards (3,296), touchdowns (31) and passing efficiency (177.6).

Alan Woods, Second Team

Woods, a freshman running back from Jacksonville, Fla., finished sixth in the country with 820 rushing yards and had 38 catches for 324 yards.

Kaleb Arterberry, Honorable Mention

Arterberry, a freshman linebacker from Pearl, had 61 tackles with 5.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. He also broke up two passes.

Tyler Bailey, Honorable Mention

Bailey, a sophomore defensive tackle from Hammond, La., had 32 tackles. He also had eight tackles for loss and three sacks.

Mason Beverly, Honorable Mention

Beverly, a freshman wide receiver from Hattiesburg, had 29 receptions for 509 yards. He also scored five touchdowns. 

Lane Hewett, Honorable Mention

Hewett, a sophomore center from Ocean Springs, helped Gulf Coast be the top passing team in the country. The Bulldogs led the NJCAA with 313.8 passing yards per game.
