Pugliese claims match against No. 3 Tyler
No. 15 Mississippi Gulf Coast dropped its women's tennis match Friday in the Tyler Invitational, falling to the third-ranked team in the country.
No. 3 Tyler, the event host, won 8-1 at the JoAnn Medlock Murphy Tennis Center.
"They just played a really good team today that was playing really good tennis," Gulf Coast coach Sam Blackburn said. "Our girls played hard and played pretty well, but we just lost to a good team. A big shoutout to Pia for a massive win at (No. 2) singles over a really good player. That was one of the biggest ones we've had individually from somebody so far, so that was really cool."
Pia Pugliese (Fr., San Juan, Argentina/Colegio Central Universitario Mariano Moreno) picked up the Bulldogs' point, winning 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 singles. She's 2-0 in singles matches in Texas, having won in straight sets Friday against No. 13 Pratt.
The Bulldogs are 5-4, while the Apaches improved to 6-2.
Gulf Coast has two matches scheduled Saturday: No. 2 Cowley County at 9 a.m. and No. 4 Collin County at 3 p.m. They'll wrap things up Sunday morning playing Jacksonville at 9 a.m.
