Smith, Vines named Bulldogs of the Week

PERKINSTON — Gabby Smith and James Vines have been named Bulldogs of the Week for Feb. 23-March 1

Smith, a freshman right-hander from Perkinston, shut out No. 20 Gulf Coast State in Panama City, Fla. She allowed five hits while striking out three without a walk in her only appearance of the week.

Vines, a sophomore right-hander from Clinton, La., shut down No. 2 Pearl River in a 6-1 win in Poplarville. He scattered five hits in seven innings of work, striking out five while allowing one run.

Also nominated:

Katelyn Brinkley, a sophomore center from Ridgeland, averaged 15.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in a 2-0 week for Gulf Coast. She had a 21-point, 12-rebound double-double in a 69-37 win over Northwest Mississippi. Brinkley also had 10 points in a 60-59 win at Copiah-Lincoln.

Zakariyya Dwight, a freshman forward from Cordele, Ga., averaged 13 points and 4.5 rebounds during a 2-0 week. Coming off the bench, he had 23 points in a 100-98 win over Northwest.

Santiago Enriquez, a freshman from Encarnacion, Paraguay, won two singles and two doubles matches during a 2-1 week for No. 12 Gulf Coast.

Pia Pugliese, a freshman from San Juan, Argentina, won three singles and two doubles matches last week for No. 15 Gulf Coast. She dominated in all three of her singles matches, winning by identical 6-0, 6-2 scores.

Piper Rushing, a freshman third baseman from D'Iberville, had an RBI double to beat No. 20 Gulf Coast State 1-0. She batted .333 during a 2-2 week.

Anthony Tanner, a freshman center fielder from Hurley, hit three home runs in a doubleheader sweep of Nunez. He slashed .333/.500/1.167 during a 3-1 week, including hitting a double in a 6-1 win at No. 2 Pearl River.
