No. 25 Bulldogs throw two-hitter

PERKINSTON — No. 25 Mississippi Gulf Coast has a busy week of baseball on the agenda, and the Bulldogs kicked it off Tuesday with the perfect recipe.

Three pitchers combined on a two-hitter, and the Gulf Coast bats gave them plenty of breathing room in a 10-1 over Baton Rouge at Ken "Curly" Farris Field.

"In a week like we have, we're playing a lot of baseball," Gulf Coast coach Zach Allen said. "Ty Harrington, Kaleb Dillon and Jesus San Miguel, right there, really set the tone for the whole week."

Jordan Davis (So., Neshoba/Neshoba Central) had three hits, including two doubles batting leadoff. Brandon Coakley (So., Covington, La./Covington) had a triple and a double, and the Bulldogs applied pressure on the basepaths all night. They swiped seven bases and took extra bases all over the bases.

The Bulldogs improved to 6-0. BRCC is 0-8.

Herrington (Fr., Meridian/Lamar School) struck out seven in five innings of work, allowing two hits and a run. Dillon (Fr., Petal/Petal) took the next three, striking out four without allowing a hit, and San Miguel (Fr., Ocean Springs/Resurrection) pitched a scoreless ninth.

"Ty Harrington was awesome, pounding the zone early," Allen said. "Dillon came in, got in some trouble and learned to get out of that stuff, and that was important. Jesus finishing it off for us was great."

Davis doubled for the Bulldogs to lead off the first, and Anthony Tanner (Fr., Hurley/East Central) followed with a single. Brady Saxton (Fr., Brandon/Northwest Rankin) plated a run with a groundout, and Garrett Gardner (Fr., Madison/Madison-Ridgeland Academy) made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly.

Davis singled in a run in the second, and Coakley doubled in a pair in the fifth for a 5-1 lead.

"Jordan really sets the tone for us," Allen said. "The dude's a hard out, and everything he hits is pretty dang hard. Coakley had two big knocks tonight, and he's been struggling a bit."

Gardner made it 6-1 in the sixth with an RBI single.

Layton Eder (So., Vancleave/Vancleave) had an RBI groundout in the seventh followed by Gardner's RBI walk.

Gulf Coast is at Coastal Alabama-North for two games on Wednesday, and back home Thursday to play Coastal-South in a 1 p.m. nine-inning game. Home games are streamed at https://mgcccbulldogs.com/watch, and tickets are available at http://mgcccbulldogs.com/tickets.
