Saxton’s 2 slams powers No. 25 MGCCC to sweep

Brady Saxton slugged grand slams in both ends of a doubleheader Wednesday, powering No. 25 Mississippi Gulf Coast to a sweep of Coastal Alabama-North in Brewton, Ala.

The freshman from Brandon had nine RBI as the Bulldogs stayed unbeaten with 6-1 and 13-2 victories, the latter in five innings.

"He was on a mission, that's for sure," Gulf Coast coach Zach Allen said. "He got in some good counts and got the barrel out twice. He's been just missing some pitches, but he was really locked in and got his swings off."

His bomb in the first game broke open a 1-0 game in the fifth. In the second, his homer was part of a 10-run third inning.

Erimel Rosado (So., Dorado, Puerto Rico/Centennial) tripled in the first game, and Jordan Davis doubled.

Griffin Wells (So., Pascagoula/Pascagoula) struck out nine in five shutout innings, scattering four hits. DJ Walls (So., Hattiesburg/Hattiesburg) and Wade Barr (So., Collins/Seminary) combined for the final two innings.

In the second game, Riley Hall (Fr., Mobile, Ala./Faith Academy) gave up one earned run in four innings, striking out three. Knute Robinson (Fr., Pascagoula/Pascagoula) struck out two in a scoreless fifth.

"They pounded the zone," Allen said. "That's a good hitting team over there. We pounded the zone and played some defense behind them. We got two quality starts; that was huge to save the pen a little bit."

Saxton also doubled in the second game. Landon Bush (Fr., Seminary/Seminary) had a solo homer and a double. Davis and Garrett Gardner (Fr., Madison/Madison-Ridgeland Academy) doubled.

The Bulldogs play a home-and-away series against Coastal Alabama-South starting Thursday at Perkinston. First pitch in the nine-inning game is set for 1 p.m. The return game is Saturday in Bay Minette, also at 1.
