Tanner’s 3 taters lead 8-HR sweep

PERKINSTON — Anthony Tanner slugged three home runs, and No. 25 Mississippi Gulf Coast hit eight Saturday in a doubleheader sweep of Nunez.

The Bulldogs won a pair of 10-4 games at Ken "Curly" Farris Field to improve to 13-4.

"That kid's just special," Gulf Coast coach Zach Allen said. "He gets a swing off when he needs to, and then he'll move the ball when there's two strikes. But today, he really got his swing off, dropping one back-side, then the two pull-side. It's just fantastic to see him do it. He's been working hard, and it's paying off for him."

Tanner, a freshman centerfielder from Hurley, hit a solo shot to left in the third inning of the first game for a 3-0 lead. In the second game, he launched a first-inning blast for a 2-0 lead. He added another two-run shot to right in the sixth to help add insurance runs for the final runs of the day.

Tanner's seven home runs are tied for second among MACCC players.

Collin Smith (Fr., McComb/Parklane Academy) hit the first homer of the day, a two-run laser over the right-field wall. Erimel Rosado (So., Dorado, Puerto Rico/Centennial) had a three-run job to center, and Garrett Gardner (Fr., Madison/Madison-Ridgeland Academy) had a two-run homer to left.

In the second game, Ben Davis (Fr., Lucedale/George County) hit a colossal blast over the batter's eye in center, and Brandon Coakley (So., Covington, La./Covington) poked one out to left.

Gulf Coast also got two strong starts. Alex Love (Fr., Hernando/Northpoint Christian) struck out five in six innings without a walk, and Ty Herrington (Fr., Meridian/Lamar School) matched the six-inning start with six strikeouts.

"We've got a lot of games coming up behind this, so it was good to be able to save the pen a little bit," Allen said. "Love did great in Game 1; Ty had a great start in Game 2. If those start can give us five, six innings, our bullpen's good enough to get us through the end of it. I was very pleased with the whole day."

Nunez is 6-7.

The Bulldogs entertain No. 22 Lansing on Monday. The doubleheader starts at 2 p.m. and will be broadcast at https://mgcccbulldogs.com/watch.
