Bulldogs net third sweep at Meridian
Mississippi Gulf Coast moved within a game of .500 in conference play Wednesday with its third sweep of the season at Meridian.
The Bulldogs won 25-13, 25-19, 25-17 to improve to 13-10 overall and 5-6 in the MACCC.
"We put a big emphasis on establishing the middle early," Gulf Coast coach Shayna Walsh said. "Malorie (Gaughf) and Dana (Cool) did a really good job, and they executed when we needed it."
Gaughf, a freshman middle blocker from Gulfport, led the team with nine kills and tied with a team-best three blocks. Cool, a freshman middle blocker from Dothan, Ala., had two blocks.
Sydney Tague (Fr., Olive Branch/DeSoto Central), who had 12 assists, started the match with two aces, and the Bulldogs picked up steam from there. Lila Turner (Fr., Kiln/Hancock) led the team with 19 assists, and Cambell Herrington (Fr., Brandon/Brandon) had 12 digs.
"We also passed better than we have in a long time," Walsh said. "We started (the season) out passing really well and then kind of fell off for a little bit. They passed really well tonight. If we're in the system, then that does the world for us and we can execute an offense."
Meridian falls to 7-19, 0-12.
Gulf Coast has a non-conference match Saturday at 1 p.m. when Coastal Alabama-North visits Dantzler Arena. Tickets are available at http://mgcccbulldogs.com/tickets, and the game will be streamed at https://mgcccbulldogs.com/watch.
