Bulldogs open playoffs Wednesday

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast closed out its first regular season of volleyball Monday with a three-set loss to No. 25 Jones, but the Bulldogs are still pointed toward the playoffs.

Gulf Coast (16-14) lost 25-14, 25-21, 25-18 at Dantzler Arena to finish sixth in the MACCC with a 7-9 mark.

The Bulldogs will make a short trip for their first playoff appearance Wednesday. They'll take on third-seed Pearl River in Poplarville. The archrival showdown starts at 6 p.m.

Gulf Coast got off to a slow start but played much better in the second set. The Bulldogs led 16-15 and trailed 22-20 before getting into a two-set deficit. They weren't able to extend the match past three sets.

Cambell Herrington (Fr., Brandon/Brandon) had 17 digs, and Mariah Hammond (Fr., Slidell, La./Northshore) led her team with six kills. Reese Sorrells (Fr., Picayune/Picayune) and Dana Cool (Fr., Dothan, Ala./Northside Methodist Academy) had two blocks each.
