Bulldogs sweep to 4th straight

Mississippi Gulf Coast won its fourth straight match with the second sweep of its inaugural season on Wednesday in Summit.

The Bulldogs beat Southwest Mississippi 25-14, 25-17, 25-17. They have won five of their last six and are now 12-6 overall, 4-5 in MACCC.

"I was pleasantly surprised. We've been known to make some errors at the wrong times, but they didn't do that tonight," Gulf Coast coach Shayna Walsh said. "They executed and were low error, high energy. They did their jobs and came out with a sweep. It was awesome."

Mariah Hammond (Fr., Slidell, La./Northshore) tied for the team-high with eight kills and added two blocks. Reese Sorrells (Fr., Picayune/Picayune) also had eight kills, and Sydney Tague (Fr., Olive Branch/DeSoto Central) had 16 assists.

Malorie Gaughf (Fr., Gulfport/Harrison Central) had three blocks.

"Mariah did really well. She terminated really well on the outside. We've been putting an emphasis on out-of-system swinging and out-of-system kills, and they've been doing a great job."

Gulf Coast, which is riding its longest win streak of the season, has a busy weekend ahead, playing two matches Friday and two Saturday in Gulf Shores, Ala. They'll play Gadsden State at 11 a.m. on the first day, followed by a scrimmage against John Melvin University. The second day starts at 1 p.m. with a match against Northwest Mississippi followed by one against host Bishop State.
