Bulldogs run to double-digit win at SMCC
Mississippi Gulf Coast got off to a fast start Tuesday at Summit and coasted to a 70-58 win over Southwest Mississippi.
Taelar Felton (So., Clinton/Clinton) had 19 points off the bench for the Bulldogs, and Katelyn Brinkley (So., Ridgeland/Ridgeland) had 14 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
"We played solid for the most part," Gulf Coast coach Hope Adams said. "Anytime you're on the road in this league, it's going to be a tough one. We fouled too much and gave up too many points at the free-throw line, but overall, I was pleased with our defensive effort. I was pleased how they were able to lock in mentally and close the game out."
Gulf Coast has won five straight to improve to 9-3 overall and stay perfect through the first three MACCC games.
The Bulldogs exploded to a 17-5 lead in the first five minutes and never looked back. They led by more than 20 in the second half.
Ariana Peagler (So., Hoover, Ala./Hoover) added 12 for Gulf Coast.
"We were able to get some buckets and some steals," Adams said. "That let us keep a big enough gap to close out the game. You never want to come over here and make it a close game."
Southwest is 5-10, 1-1.
Gulf Coast hosts Hinds on Thursday at Dantzler Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
