Bulldogs are 4-seed in R23 Tourney

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast couldn't grab a share of the MACCC title on Monday at Dantzler Arena, but the Bulldogs will get a bye into the NJCAA Region 23 Women's Basketball Tournament.

Pearl River won the conference outright by beating Gulf Coast 61-45, and the Bulldogs finished in a three-way tie for third place. They earned the fourth seed in the postseason after the tiebreakers were applied.

"I think offensive rebounds, second-chance shots, hurt us," Gulf Coast coach Hope Adams said. "Offensively, we weren't able to get any momentum late. The second quarter really hurt us; we only scored four points. But now it's tournament time."

Taelar Felton (So., Clinton/Clinton) led Gulf Coast with 22 points, and Katelyn Brinkley (So., Ridgeland/Ridgeland) added 10.

Gulf Coast closes out the regular-season 17-6, 11-3 MACCC. Pearl River is 20-5, 13-1.

The Bulldogs will face the winner of the matchup between the fifth- vs. 12th-seeds on Saturday. That opponent will be determined after seedings are announced Tuesday and the first round is played Thursday.

"It's practically a brand-new team except for two players: Katelyn Brinkley and Taylor Felton," Adams said. "They've left their mark on his program. So now we've got to get ready to go make a run through the Region 23 Tournament."
