No. 13 Bulldogs push No. 7 Seward County to brink

No. 13 Mississippi Gulf Coast rallied from a doubles deficit Friday to take a lead against No. 7 Seward County, but the Bulldog lost a pair of three-set singles matches and fell 6-3.

The teams were playing on Day 2 of the Tyler Invitational in Tyler, Texas.

"For a few minutes there, it was really looking like we were about to win the match," Gulf Coast coach Sam Blackburn said. "We lost, but there were two tiebreakers that did not go our way. We gave ourselves a chance, but it did not go away. Those guys fought their tails off, and I'm very proud of their effort for sure."

Gulf Coast is 5-4, and Seward County is 3-4.

Brennan McGlothin (Fr., French Camp/French Camp Academy) and Connor Hartfield (So., Oak Grove/Oak Grove) picked up the lone Gulf Coast doubles point by winning 8-6 at No. 3.

Nick Dulaney (So., Long Beach/Long Beach) won his No. 6 singles match 6-2, 6-1, and Jan Bako (Fr., Ostrava, Czech Republic/Hladnov) won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles to give Gulf Coast a 3-2 lead in the match.

Santiago Enriquez (Fr., Encarnacion, Paraguay/CEUCE) took his opponent at No. 3 to a third-set tiebreaker and got edged 10-8. Warren Hudson (Fr., Ocean Springs/Ocean Springs) bounced back from a slow start in the first set of No. 4 to force a third before losing 6-0, 5-7, 10-4.

"Nick won in singles, and Warren almost fought his way back," Blackburn said. "He's down 6-0, 5-2 with match points against in the second, just like (Thursday) night. He couldn't quite finish it off in the tiebreaker, but what a crazy effort."

The Bulldogs have two matches scheduled Saturday: No. 1 Tyler at noon and No. 6 Collin County at 6 p.m. They'll wrap things up Sunday morning playing Jacksonville at 9 a.m.
