No. 6 Gulf Coast downs Navarro 6-1

No. 6 Mississippi Gulf Coast opened its softball season with a 6-1 victory over Navarro on Friday in the Wallace State Tournament in Hanceville, Ala.

Deborah Elmore with 3-for-3 with an RBI double, and Ole Miss Kaitlin Lee pitched a five-hitter, striking out eight with no walks.

"Kaitlin's control was great," Gulf Coast coach Kenneth Long said. "She was pretty much able to hold them down. I never felt like they threatened much. She stayed ahead in the count and got a lot of little popups and ground balls on the infield. She had control of all of her pitches and did a great job."

Izzy Werdann banged out a two-run home run, and Hannah Melendrez had an RBI double.  Lee aided her cause by driving in a run with a sacrifice bunt.

The Bulldogs (1-0) had six hits, including a double by Molly Murphy.

Elmore's big blow was hard-hit ball.

"The double was the line drive that almost hit the second baseman in the head," Long said. "She couldn't get her glove up, it was hit so hard. It went all the way to the fence."

Gulf Coast plays in the NJCAA's Division II, while Navarro received votes in the Division I preseason poll.
