Lady Bulldogs blast Hinds

Mississippi Gulf Coast pounded its way out of a three-game hitting slump Monday, getting 26 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Hinds in Raymond.

The No. 6 Lady Bulldogs (20-2) won both games in five innings, beating the Lady Eagles 11-0 in Game 1 and 8-0 in the second.

"I think we were a little bit more relaxed today," Gulf Coast coach Kenneth Long said. "We got some runs in early. We got some runs in early, and once we got going we got runs in every inning."

In the previous three games, Gulf Coast managed just 14 hits and batted .192. The Lady Bulldogs had 14 hits in the first game, alone.

Tabitha Johnson and Lexie Mathis went 4-for-6 on the day, with Johnson driving in four runs and Mathis three.

"Tab had a big day for us," Long said.

Hannah Melendrez had a double and a triple, and Deborah Elmore and Izzy Werdann doubled. Werdann and Brittany Cooley drove in three runs.

Nora Keehn (5-0) got the win in the opener, allowing just three hits and struck out six.

Kaitlin Lee struck out six in Game 2 to improve to 10-1. She hasn't walked a batter in 23.2 innings, striking out 23 in that span.

Gulf Coast returns to action Friday at Coahoma. The doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.
