Werdann wins MACJC Player of the Week
PERKINSTON – No. 3 Mississippi Gulf Coast third baseman Izzy Werdann's clutch three-run home run in the state tournament has made her MACJC Player of the Week.
Werdann, a freshman from Tate High School in Pensacola, Fla., hit the game-winning shot with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the Lady Bulldogs to a 3-2 win Friday over No. 7 Itawamba.
It was her fifth home run of the season, and she also added a single in the game.
She's the second straight Gulf Coast player to win the award, following center fielder Hannah Melendrez last week. Shortstop Lexie Mathis also won the award earlier this year.
Lady Bulldogs pitchers have won Pitcher of the Week eight times. Kaitlin Lee has six, and Nora Keehn has two.
Gulf Coast returns to action in the rain-delayed MACJC Tournament on Tuesday in Ellisville. The Lady Bulldogs play the hosts, No. 5 Jones County, at 5 p.m.
