No. 3 MGCCC moves into second after sweep

PERKINSTON – No. 3 Mississippi Gulf Coast moved into second place in the MACJC with a sweep of Northwest on Sunday.

Brittany Cooley had five hits on the day to propel the Lady Bulldogs to 4-1 and 6-1 victories at Ross-Smith Field.

"Second is the first one to lose," the catcher/third baseman said. "I want to be in first place, and I think this team should be in first place."

Gulf Coast improved to 31-3, 15-3 MACJC. The Lady Bulldogs jumped No. 9 Itawamba after the Lady Indians lost Game 1 at Southwest on Sunday.

Gulf Coast also got more help in the standings Sunday, when Pearl River split with No. 6 Jones. The Lady Bulldogs are a game behind JCJC.

"I think in a way, it's important where we are because it's all about hosting in the playoffs," Long said. "It's important, but this team is looking for something bigger than that."

Northwest falls to 14-12, 8-10.

Cooley had a bases-loaded double in the third inning of the first game to score the game's first two runs.

"She came through with the bases loaded early and hit that double to kind of blow that game open," Gulf Coast coach Kenneth Long said. "She's just seeing the ball well. As long as she keeps being selective at the plate, she's going to hit the ball hard somewhere."

Her sixth-inning single scored Kelli Berry for a 4-0 lead.

Nora Keehn (10-1) allowed a run in the seventh, but struck out seven without any walks in her five-hitter.

Hannah Melendrez and Alyssa Hardy had two hits each in the opener. Lexie Mathis had a double.

Kaitlin Lee dominated the second game from the circle, striking out four and walking one. She allowed five hits, but got three for herself.

Deborah Elmore had a double among two hits, and Cooley added two more hits.

"I feel like coach has helped a whole lot on focusing on attacking the ball wherever it's at instead of thinking in and out," Cooley said. "During the Jones games and a couple other games, I got in my head they're going to pitch me inside.
