Mississippi Gulf Coast plays a doubleheader with major MACJC and national implications on Tuesday at East Central.
The third-ranked Lady Bulldogs (31-3, 15-3) play the fourth-ranked Lady Warriors (32-5, 16-4) at Decatur, with national rankings and conference standing positions on the line.
Gulf Coast moved up to second in the state over the weekend, one game back of Jones. East Central is tied for third, a game back.
"They are a very good team," Lady Bulldogs coach Kenneth Long said. "They're well coached. They lost real early in conference play and have really picked it up since then."
The Lady Warriors lost three of their first five MACJC games. They are led by Mahalia Gibson, who is batting .439. On the mound, Chloe Thaggard's 17 wins ranks second in the country.
Gulf Coast's Lexie Mathis has 13 home runs, tied for second in the country. Kaitlin Lee has an ERA of 0.55, third-best among pitchers with 40-plus innings pitched.
The last time these two teams met was in last year's Region 23 Tournament championship round. The Lady Bulldogs got two victories coming out of the losers' bracket to win the title.
"It's going to be a great game," said Long.
