Lady Bulldogs keep rolling at Alabama Southern

PERKINSTON – Deborah Elmore powered another Mississippi Gulf Coast doubleheader sweep Wednesday, pounding three doubles and driving in four runs against Alabama Southern.

The Lady Bulldogs won 7-0 and 10-2, the second in five innings, to stay unbeaten in their first 10 games.

Alabama Southern falls to 0-14.

Elmore is batting .424, leading a team hitting .341. She has six doubles, a triple, a home run and 12 RBI.

Her double in the top of the sixth of Game 1 helped break the game open, scoring two runs to make it 5-0.

"She kept fouling the ball off and fouling the ball off," Long said. "She got a base hit with the bases loaded. That was big."

Izzy Werdann had three hits in the first game. Her RBI triple in the fourth inning opened the scoring.

"Izzy got us going that first game," Long said. "She hit it over the right fielder's head."

Brittany Cooley and Kaitlin Lee had two hits. Cooley had a double and a triple on the day.

Kristen Gardner (2-0) got the shutout, allowing just two hits and striking out five.

"We talked to her yesterday about coming, settling in and pitching well," Long said. "She did a great job for us. She was really, really sharp."

Elmore had the middle of back-to-back-to-back RBI doubles in the first inning of the second game, part of a six-run outburst. She added another RBI double in the second and singled ahead of Hannah Melendrez's fourth-inning homer.

Melendrez had three hits in the game, and Lexie Mathis added a double.

Lee improved to 5-0 after striking out six and allowing three hits.

Gulf Coast returns to action Friday on the first day of the Sun Chief Classic at Faulkner State. The Lady Bulldogs play Pensacola State and Jefferson Davis the first day, then Enterprise State and Southern Union.
