Gulf Coast makes it 12 in a row

No. 6 Mississippi Gulf Coast kept rolling Friday, winning two times at the Sun Chief Classic in Gulf Shores, Ala., to improve to 12-0.

The Lady Bulldogs rallied for a 10-4 win over Pensacola State, then shut out Jefferson Davis 3-0.

Pensacola State jumped out to a 4-0 lead after their first two at bats.

"We started out a just a little bit sluggish," Gulf Coast coach Kenneth Long said. "A little bit flat, maybe. We finally got our bats going and made some defensive plays to get going."

Kristen Gardner entered in relief in the second, going the rest of the way to record her third win of the season. She allowed one hit in a bases-loaded situation, then only three hits the rest of the way, striking out six.

"She did a great job," Long said. "She came in in a pretty tough spot. She threw strikes, got us out and got some momentum going."

Gulf Coast got one back in the bottom of the second on Molly Murphy's double. Hannah Melendrez's two-run double in the fourth tied the score.

Brittany's Cooley's sacrifice in the fourth broke the tie, and Izzy Werdann's two-run triple in the fifth started a five-run explosion.

Melendrez and Werdann had two hits for Gulf Coast.

Kaitlin Lee shut out Jefferson Davis (0-6) on three hits in the second game. She struck out four didn't allow a hit until the fifth and didn't allow a baserunner to reach second base.

Lee's RBI single in the third opened the scoring, and Melendrez crushed a homer in the fourth to close it.

Cooley had two hits for the Lady Bulldogs, who return to action the tournament Saturday. They play Enterprise State at 11:15 a.m. and Southern Union at 1:30 p.m.
