Mississippi Gulf Coast drew a tough assignment in new head coach Izzy Werdann's first game in charge Thursday, losing 13-4 in five innings to Northwest Florida State at the Mardi Gras Invitational in Youngsville, La.
The Raiders are the defending NJCAA Division I champions and ranked atop the preseason poll. Gulf Coast plays in Division II.

Gulf Coast had nine hits, only one less than NWFS (5-0), but the Raiders broke a 1-1 tie with six in the third.
The Bulldogs conclude the Mardi Gras Invitational on Friday with a pair of games. They play Angelina at noon and Baton Rouge immediately after.
