No. 22 Bulldogs allow 3 hits in sweep
No. 22 Mississippi Gulf Coast threw a pair of shutouts Saturday in a sweep of Coahoma at Clarksdale.
The Bulldogs beat the Tigers 9-0 and 8-0, both games in five innings.
"We played good," Gulf Coast coach Izzy Werdann said. "We hit a little bit, and we pitched a lot. I think they had themselves a day. They looked really good out there, and we had a couple long balls."
Gulf Coast improved to 18-11 overall, 4-6 MACCC.
Kailee Lawson (Fr., Hurley/East Central) and Kevionna Myers (Fr., Bassfield/Jefferson Davis) homered in the first game, and Myers added a double. Brooklyn Mitchell (So., Gulfport/St. Patrick) and Breyona Tanner (Fr., Hurley/East Central) also had two hits.
McKenzie Smith (Fr., St. Amant, La./Prairieville) went the distance in the circle, coming within an out of a no-hitter. She allowed two hits, striking out eight with only one walk.
"McKenzie had herself a day," Werdann said. "One of the hits was a bunt, and the other one was a fisted ball over the infield. She did a really great job keeping the hitters off balance. Not giving up a run was pretty big, and we're hoping to carry some of that momentum into Tuesday."
Gabby Smith (Fr., Perkinston/Harrison Central) and Brooklynn Peterson (So., Ocean Springs/Ocean Springs) combined for a one-hitter in the second game. Smith allowed the hit in three innings of work, and Peterson threw a hitless two innings of relief.
Mitchell had two more hits. Lawson had two RBI to finish the day with five.
Coahoma is 0-22, 0-8.
Gulf Coast is back on the road Tuesday, traveling to No. 1 Pearl River. First pitch in Poplarville is set for 4 p.m. The games will be streamed at https://prccmedia.com/watchlive/gold/, and tickets are available at https://prccathletics.com/tickets.
