Gulf Coast loses twice at Perk

Mississippi Gulf Coast rebounded from a poor first game and a hiccup to start Game 2, but they couldn't finish a third comeback at Ross-Smith Field on Saturday.

The Bulldogs (23-18, 9-13 MACCC) lost 12-0 in five innings and 9-8 to No. 20 Northeast Mississippi.

The Tigers (34-10, 11-9) scored three times in the top of the first in the second game, but Gulf Coast quickly tied it up. Caroline Batson (So., Wiggins/Stone) doubled in two runs in the bottom of the inning, and Piper Rushing (Fr., D'Iberville/D'Iberville) tied it up with a single.

After falling behind 6-3 in the top of the third, Baleigh Tullos (So., Hurley/East Central) doubled in a run, and Rushing picked up another RBI single. An error during the next at-bat allowed the tying run to score.

Northeast scored twice in the fourth and another in the fifth. With two outs in the fifth, Kailee Lawson (Fr., Hurley/East Central) drove in a run with a single, and Breyona Tanner (Fr., Hurley/East Central) made it 9-8 with an RBI double.

The Bulldogs got their first two batters on in the seventh, but a double play helped end the threat.

Batson went 4-for-4 and pitched four strong innings of relief, allowing one hit and one run. Rushing and Lawson each had two hits.

In the opener, Gulf Coast got only two hits and walked eight batters.

The Bulldogs will host Copiah-Lincoln on Wednesday. The doubleheader starts at 4 p.m. and will be streamed at https://mgcccbulldogs.com/watch
