McKenzie Smith threw a two-hitter, and Brooklyn Mitchell piled up five hits in Mississippi Gulf Coast's doubleheader sweep of Mississippi Delta at Moorhead. The Bulldogs won the first game 11-1 and the second 11-3, both in five innings.
"These two wins were good," Bulldogs coach Izzy Werdann said. "We played really good ball today. We hit some balls and squared them up. The pitchers went out there and did a really great job, keeping the scores low. That's an offense that has been causing some chaos in the conference, so they did a good job."
Gulf Coast improved to 21-16 overall, 7-11 MACCC.
Smith (Fr., St. Amant, La./Prairieville) struck out six and walked one in her first-game gem. Gulf Coast scored in every inning. Piper Rushing (Fr., D'Iberville/D'Iberville) and Breyona Tanner (Fr., Hurley/East Central) had three hits each, and Tanner drove in three runs.
Mitchell (So., Gulfport/St. Patrick) and Lexi Patterson (Fr., Ackerman/Choctaw County) had two hits each, and Baleigh Tullos (So., Hurley/East Central) doubled.
Mitchell tacked on three more hits in the second game.
"She swung it well today," Werdann said. "She beat out a bunt, and using her speed along with her power, it helps keep the infield from playing the grass line. It makes them have to play true to the hitter."
Lexi Patterson (Fr., Ackerman/Choctaw County) and Natalie Jones (So., Lucedale/George County) had two hits each, and both tripled.
Tanner allowed three hits, striking out two.
MDCC is 10-26, 3-15.
